 A Message From The Director

Welcome, καλωσορισατε (kalosorisate) to the website of the Center for Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies at Queens College, City University of New York. The purpose of this website is to inform and educate on the multifaceted phenomenon we call “Hellenism” through the Center’s programs and activities. Accordingly, our website consists of two parts.

• The first part pertains to the Center itself. Its main objective is to inform the general public on what the Center is all about. We are addressing especially current students but also prospective students in order to help them make an educated decision leading them to study at Queens College and attend the Center’s programs.

• The second part aims at informing and educating the visitors of our website about the broader phenomenon of Hellenism as well as about Greek culture and identity. In this vein, the Center’s website offers a variety of eclectic links. We start with the multifaceted landscape of the Greek American community. We also offer rich cultural material on Modern Greece, as well as Cyprus. The picture of Hellenism would be incomplete if we did not include the Ottoman era and the Greek Revolution and the worlds of Byzantium and classical Greece. Our aim is to promote through this website the idea of an enlightened Hellenism, which, after all, is reflected in the Center’s logo: Greeks are those who partake in our culture (Ελληνες καλουνται οι της ημετερας παιδευσεως μετεχοντες). Please visit us again. We will continue to improve as we sail along with the Odyssey of Hellenism in America and beyond.
